Supporting your child

There are many ways in which you can support your children with their learning at home, one of these is to encourage and support their learning of Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) and another is to support them with their Home Learning Project each term.

Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFS) are designed to support the development of the mental skills and key knowledge that underpin much of the maths work in schools. They include facts such as number bonds and timetables. They are particularly useful when calculating, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing but they also underpin many other areas of mathematics.

Learning KIRFs shouldn’t be time consuming; they can be practised anywhere, such as walking to school, at mealtimes, and in the car. The most important thing is practising them regularly - little and often will support your child in retaining these facts in the long term.

By learning these key facts, which have been structured to build upon each other term by term and year by year, children will leave school with a much stronger foundation of mathematical understanding to build upon.

Please engage with your children in the learning of their KIRFs and make it as fun and practical as you can.
